Balfour Beatty has been successfully trialling Hazibags at a Crossrail site, using the opportunity to share the innovation in their own case study.

Case study created by Balfour Beatty for Crossrail

Inspiration

Hazardous waste collection is a service which almost every construction site must hire. On projects such as Crossrail compliance with environmental standards and regulations is at the top of the agenda, and with some of the sites being heavily contaminated with asbestos and other hazardous waste, storage and disposal of such material can be costly.

Innovation

DSC 0806 LRBalfour Beatty has engaged with Hazibag UK, and is trialling a number of Hazibags at Plumstead. These UN-approved, flat-pack bags are ideal for containing solid hazardous waste such as empty paint pots, asbestos, used spill kits, aerosol cans, and a variety of other construction waste which cannot be disposed of with general waste. A major benefit over other waste storage containers is that the bags take so little space when not in use, and when full, can be conveniently and safely stacked to save space. The strong but lightweight material Hazibags are made from contributes to a great saving in delivery cost, as well as to the overall environmental impact of transportation (e.g.: 70% reduction in CO2 emissions).

Additional information

  • Hazibags come in a variety of sizes, from small 200l bags up to 3m3 Bags come as flat-pack, so they can be sent via post (next day delivery)
  • One pallet of Hazibags can contain up to 64 empty bags (as opposed to only four drums)
  • Cost of a 200 litre bag = £35 (bulk orders are discounted)
  • Cost of a 1000 litre bag = £65 (great value)
  • There are four secure lifting points for safe manoeuvring of the bags once full
  • The bag material can withstand up to one tonne of load, and the zip for the flap up to 0.5 tonne
