Laing O'Rourke is benefiting from the mobility of Hazibag on the C502 Crossrail construction package on Liverpool Street Station.

Background

The international engineering business, Laing O’Rourke is delivering the C502 construction package on Liverpool Street Station main works for Crossrail. The new Crossrail station will be located below existing Liverpool Street and Moorgate stations and Finsbury Circus.

A new Crossrail ticket hall will be constructed beneath Liverpool Street at the eastern end close to the Broadgate development. At the western end, a new ticket hall will be built by expanding the existing Moorgate station ticket hall. The construction package is over five sites: Blomfield box, Moorgate vent relief shaft, Moorgate ticket hall, Broadgate ticket hall and the tunnels linking the Moorgate and Broadgate ticket halls. Work started in 2012 and is due to be completed in 2018.

Managing waste on site

DSC 0291 LRWith a strong focus on good waste practices and ensuring the health and safety of its people, Laing O’Rourke introduced Hazibags at the start of the Liverpool Street Station build. The 200 litre Hazibags are used for the containment of solid hazardous wastes including used aerosols, empty paint tins, used spill material and empty bitumen containers.

Benefits

Laing O’Rourke is benefiting from Hazibags in a number of ways:

  • The mobility of the product means that the Hazibag can be craned down the 37 metre deep tunnels (seven levels) and left on each level at the point of waste generation. The bags are then craned back up to ground level. This helps to ensure that hazardous (COSHH) waste is disposed of correctly as it is made easy for the site workers.
  • As a flat-packed container, Hazibags are easy for Laing O’Rourke to store away on a shelf until needed, helping to keep the site tidy and improve health and safety.
  • The highly visible nature of Hazibag makes it easy for site staff to dispose of their hazardous waste correctly.

Client feedback

“The mobility of the Hazibag is helping us to manage our hazardous waste as it can be opened and placed at various levels around the site where the waste is generated and then craned up to ground level when full. Also, as the Hazibags are flat packed they are easy to store away on a shelf until needed which helps to keep the site tidy.”
